2018 was a big year for social media from hacks to major algorithm changes, it was hard to keep up! Here’s a recap of the five biggest social media updates of 2018.
Facebook was hacked
The Cambridge Analytica scandal started Facebook’s bad year. When you combine the hacks with the negative press, Facebook lost the consumer’s trust and prompted many people to leave the platform altogether.
Facebook made huge algorithm changes
The new Facebook algorithm focuses on “meaningful conversations,” which significantly hurt organic reach and put the focus on engagement.
Instagram launched IGTV
Instagram went up against YouTube last year by creating its own video platform. While YouTube is still the clear winner, IGTV is catching on with social media influencers and brands.
Twitter’s fight against spam
Due to the large amount of spam and robots on Twitter, the platform cracked down on automation and created a system to flag automated accounts. While this might mess up some marketing tactics and lower a page’s number of followers, it really improved user experience.
Google+ is leaving the social space
Google announced that Google+ wasn’t performing well and will be leaving the social media space for good. This news didn’t come as a surprise and it mainly affects businesses using it for occasional updates.
